Celtics Win Record 18th NBA Title in Game 5

Boston Celtics win 18th NBA championship

It's a rarity in sports when a long-term strategy truly bears fruit.

Players suffer injuries, egos strain relationships, and shots miss their mark.

For years, the Boston Celtics have borne the label of being “next up.” Despite the talents of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown—two players shouldering the dual pressures of potential and expectation—the stars never seemed to align for a championship win.

Celtics Win Record 18th NBA Title in Game 5

Following a loss to the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 Finals and a disappointing defeat by the Miami Heat in last year's Eastern Conference Finals, the pressure intensified to secure a championship.

Now, after defeating the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 in a decisive Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday in Boston, the Celtics have completed their arduous journey to the top. This victory marks the Boston Celtics' record 18th NBA championship.

After the game, an elated and relieved Tatum reflected on the past seven years as a tumultuous journey.

To be able to say we did it, that we came together, and we won a championship. Banner number 18 has been hanging over our heads for so many years. We won a championship,” he said.

The Celtics had an opportunity to secure a sweep in Game 4 in Dallas after taking a 3-0 series lead. However, poor shooting, subpar rebounding, and stellar performances from Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Mavericks' supporting cast extended the series back to Causeway Street.

But on Monday night, exactly 16 years after their last championship victory against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2008, the Celtics took care of business.

Boston started strong, showcasing crisp offense and staunch defense. Tatum nearly achieved a double-double by halftime. The Celtics held both Doncic and Irving to under 10 points, and Payton Pritchard's half-court buzzer-beater sent TD Garden into a frenzy, with the Celtics leading 67-46.

It was an ideal start.

Dallas managed to make a brief push after the break, but Boston’s substantial lead and relentless hustle proved insurmountable.

Instead of waiting for victory, the Celtics aggressively attacked rebounds and maintained defensive pressure throughout the second half. Their persistence paid off with Boston's most significant win in nearly two decades.

Fans roared collectively when the final buzzer sounded, recognizing the importance of the 18th banner.

Sisters Michaela and Alyssa Alperen, along with their mother, Lisa, of Peabody, were “ecstatic” after the game.

“We’re gonna celebrate with the parade, and then someone’s getting a Banner 18 tattoo,” Michaela said, nodding towards her mother.

Tatum concluded the game with 31 points and 11 assists. Brown earned MVP honors, which he shared with his teammates. After 17 seasons, Al Horford finally won his first championship. He reminisced about a 2016 meeting when former team executive and Celtics legend Danny Ainge told him, “there’s nothing like winning in Boston.”

“And the fact that it has come, it has happened, JT, JB stepping up in a big way and leading us, it’s special,” he said.

When the Celtics fell to Golden State in 2022, it was evident that their missing piece wasn’t talent but experience. This time, they demonstrated to a less experienced Dallas squad why they were the NBA’s best team this season and how they had learned from past lessons.

Having now secured nearly every possible title except the most crucial one before Monday night, these Celtics have etched their place in history alongside the franchise’s greats. Boston can finally cash in on the promise it has been striving to fulfill for so long.
