Kiefer praised his father's dedication and love for his craft, highlighting a life well-lived.

Donald Sutherland's illustrious career spanned over fifty years, with nearly 200 credits to his name. The announcement of his passing was met with a flood of tributes. Actor Rob Lowe, who worked with Sutherland on the miniseries "Salem's Lot," called him "One of our greatest actors" and reminisced about his charisma and talent. Cary Elwes, a co-star in the 2001 television film "Uprising," expressed his sorrow and gratitude for having worked with Sutherland.

The Creative Artists Agency confirmed that Donald Sutherland passed away in Miami, Florida, due to a prolonged illness. Sutherland, a Canadian native originally from New Brunswick, started out as a radio newspaper reporter before relocating to London in 1957 to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His breakout roles came in the late 1960s and early '70s, with notable performances in "The Dirty Dozen" and "M*A*S*H."

Sutherland became one of Hollywood's most versatile leading men in the '70s. He starred in "Klute" alongside Jane Fonda, "Don't Look Now," and the 1978 remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." His role as Hawkeye Pierce in "M*A*S*H" solidified his place in cinematic history. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences, remembering Sutherland as a great Canadian artist.

US President Joe Biden also paid tribute, calling Sutherland a unique actor who entertained and inspired for decades. Director Ron Howard, who worked with Sutherland on "Backdraft," praised him as one of the most intelligent and engaging film actors. Jane Fonda, who dated Sutherland for two years, shared fond memories of their time together, including performances for servicemen during an anti-Vietnam war tour.

Sutherland's career encompassed a wide range of genres. He starred in "JFK," "Backdraft," and comedies like "Fool's Gold." In "The Hunger Games" franchise, he portrayed the sinister President Coriolanus Snow, a role that endeared him to a new generation of fans. He also played Mr. Bennet in the 2005 adaptation of "Pride & Prejudice."

Despite his vast body of work, Sutherland never received an Oscar nomination but was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017. He was known for his political activism, often reflecting his beliefs in his roles. He hoped his portrayal of President Snow would inspire young audiences to become more politically active.

Sutherland continued to work in television, winning an Emmy for HBO's "Citizen X" and appearing in series like "Commander-in-Chief." He received nine Golden Globe nominations, winning twice for "Citizen X" and "Path to War."

Rob Lowe and Jane Fonda, among others, offered their condolences, celebrating Sutherland's incredible talent and impact on the industry. Sutherland is survived by his five children: Rachel, Roeg, Rossif, Angus, and Kiefer. He starred alongside Kiefer in "Forsaken," a film about a father-son relationship, which mirrored their real-life bond.
